Stacked graph update
December is a tough time of the year to get anything done and I now realize that my plan to develop stacked graph visualizations of Newstogram data (which required learning a new programming language) was overly optimistic.
I’ve pushed this out to 2010 but to keep me motivated I have added two stacked graph visualizations to my data wall:
1. Visualization of my Last.fm listening history (full PDF)
Nieman recaps ONA09 sessions… using tweets
The Nieman Journalism Lab has taken an interesting approach in their recap of the Online News Association annual conference… its comprised almost entirely of tweets. The ONA conference, which ran Thursday through Saturday, was extensively covered through Twitter and conference organizers made #ONA09 tweets even easier to follow by giving each session its own hashtag. Nieman Labs has taken this raw material and summed up the various keynotes and panels from Friday through a series of tweets from conference participants. A similar summary of Saturday’s sessions is slated for tomorrow.
Some interesting posts that I missed first time around:
aherz: “What are you doing” will be changed to seem less trivial. @ev – Will likely be changed to “What did you have for breakfast?” (from the Evan Williams keynote)
joeruiz: People don’t click on right-hand rail content. Seen as secondary, lesser info. Might want to use for advertising. —AND— jbatsell: Panelist at says Web audiences are “lazy, selfish and ruthless … And we love them.” (both from the #ONAstory session on how writing for online is different than writing for print)
burtherman: HuffingtonPost editors can do A-B testing for headlines and stories on 5 minute cycles (from the #ONAmtrx session on how to better use metrics to better engage with your audience)
laurenmichell: RT @burtherman: Pitch advice: Show the product early/first, talk about the user need being met, live demo better than slides (from the #ONA660 session where 6 startup ideas were pitched to VCs)
